In the first piece in this series on Yves Rossy, I introduced the Swiss visionary and innovator who is the only man in the world to fly a fixed wing with jets. Now it may be possible for you to do it too, strap on a wing and be like Jetman! In this interim article we look at Yves new concept – Flight School ! Rossy hopes that one day flying like him “ can be for everybody.”
On Febuary 8th news of a video came online talking about the idea of a Jetman Glider School – where Yves would open the opportunity to teach people to fly a fixed glider without the jets! Is this the next step for him, and the evolution of human flight!? We will ask him in our interview for part two. In the mean time, this is what we know so far.
The wing that he currently uses with jets is strapped to his back and contains it’s own independent parachute and a safety release mechanism to free the wing from his body if he looses control – this happened to him on his flight attempt across The Straight of Gibraltar. Yves also has two parachutes which are independent from the wing that can be deployed separately, with or without the glider strapped to him. Yves is a professional aviator and adopts stringent safety mechanisms to his pioneering concepts. Safety is key in all aspects of design, fun is the second!
It seems only natural for the progression of Yves life as the Jetman to evolve into teaching others how to do it. The question is, what skills will a successful applicant need to get accepted to Jetman Glider School? This too we will ask him – stay tuned for part two.
Here’s an excellent interview with Yves on TED in July 2011:
