There is no red line running through this week’s TGIF post. Just great surfing and lots of it! Enjoy!
Title Time at the Lane?
It’s crunch time in the ASP world title race, and after Day 1 at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic it looks like current ratings leader Joel Parkinson is well and truly in the driver’s seat. To clinch the title in Santa Cruz, Parko needs to win the event and Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning finish no higher than equal 9th and 5th respectively. As it is, Joel is the only one of the trio to win his Round 1 heat and move through directly to Round 3. Is the writing on the wall? Doubtful, but stranger things have happened!
Larger and Larger
It seems like every time I log in to my YouTube account, there is another Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards entry sitting in my in-box. This week there were three of them!
Shane Dorian at Jaws – Ride of the Year Entry #4
If you follow this space at all, you’ve already seen Shane Dorian’s deep tube at Jaws, Maui, Hawaii on October 9, 2012. This is a new and very impressive angle shot from low down on the cliff facing the break. It’s worth noting that the cameraman who has the best footage of the winning ride gets a fat chunk of cash too, so this is definitely worth a look!
Diego Medina at Punta de Lobos – Ride of the Year Entry
This clip was shot on August 12, 2012 but has only come on-line now. It features local charger Diego Medina dropping into a chilly monster at Punta de Lobos, Chile. Cojones mas grandes!
Justine Dupont at Aileens – Girls Performance Entry
You may have already seen this wave by Justine Dupont of Lacanau, France towing into a perfect, spitting tube at Aileens, Ireland on October 21, 2012. It made quite a stir when it first hit the net, and it is continuing to bring the noise as an official entry in the Billabong Girls Best Overall Performance category of the 2013 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
Not only is Matt Meola one of the world’s best aerialists, he is also one of the hardest charging big wave surfers at Jaws, the spot that has redefined big wave surfing many times over. It’s never fun falling out there, but especially not when you’re paddling into the place rather than taking the easy way out and getting towed into some mega monsters with the help of a personal water craft. In this little clip, Matt tries to put that sinking feeling into words for people like us who’ll never be able to experience it for ourselves!
John John Florence is Epic!
John John Florence most likely won’t be the ASP World Champion this year, but will almost definitely be lifting the ASP Rookie of the Year trophy over his head at the ASP Awards Banquet. Thanks to a hook-up from the good people at O’Neill, I was lucky enough to sit down with him during the Euro leg of the ASP World Tour. Although we didn’t talk much about how his season has been going, he did have some fairly interesting things to say on a wide range of other topics. Here are the best five minutes of it!
It’s the Great Lakes for Goodness Sake!
From base-jumping out of a hot air balloon to surfing on the Great Lakes… What will those wild and crazy guys at Red Bull come up with next? Somehow someone in charge of the Red Bull New Wave project convinced professional big wave surfer Jamie Sterling to leave the warm confines of his home in Hawaii and to hop on a plane with the mission to find and surf decent waves in the Great Lakes.
At Beaver Bay in Duluth, Minnesota, Jamie managed to avoid frostbite and colliding with icebergs in freezing cold temperatures, and actually surf some remarkably big waves despite being in an actual fresh water lake, Lake Superior to be exact!
Stay classy, surfers! And have an EPIC weekend!
