The beginning of Shane Murphy’s wingsuit video sagely advises that the sport ‘…can seriously injure or kill you even with the proper training and equipment. Do not try the things you see on this video at home.’ Sadly, this adice has turned out to be all too true.
According to a report on LeDauphine.com, Shane and another wingsuit pilot jumped from the top of the Crois de Fer above Magland, down valley from Chamonix, on Tuesday, 7 August, afternoon. As soon as the other pilot arrived at the landing by himself he called for a rescue. Rescue efforts began that afternoon and although assisted by a helicopter from the PGHM, Murphy’s body was not recovered until the next afternoon.
Murphy was reportedly a highly experienced wingsuit pilot with over 1000 flights.
The accident happens just weeks after Chamonix banned wingsuit flights from the Brevent and Aiguille du Midi lift stations.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Shane’s family and friends during this sad time.
Blessed are the dead,
For they have been wings to fly.
