Surfing websites are about as prolific today as the plague was in the Middle Ages. They’re everywhere! Unfortunately, the vast majority of them are a complete waste of time, but I’m not talking about wasting time in a fun way. So, in the interest of your personal entertainment, I’ve put together a short list that should, in no particular order, get you amped for your next session, make you laugh (or maybe cry), upset your mother, or just give you something to take your mind off work! It’s good to cut loose every now and then! Thank God It’s Friday! Time to go surfing!
Marine Layer is where the most talented surfer on the planet posts anything and everything he finds interesting going on in his life, including clips of his latest sessions, rants, raves, scribbles, snap shots and a whole bunch of other stuff that he thinks is inspiring or insane! If you’re scratching your head wondering when www.kellyslater.com changed its name, don’t worry. These days, even King Kelly says that Dane Reynolds is the Man. And although the Man, I mean Dane, is still sponsored by Quiksilver, he’s got a little side gig going on called Summer Teeth that you’ll find here too. Let me let Dane explain: “if you’re confused right about now, summer teeth is a brand i’m involved in, that i helped start, and we make useful items such as t-shirts to cover your torso and towells to dry your body. marine layer is a production company. we make webisodes and other usless shit.” Glad we sorted that out!
Warwick Wright is a former professional surfer from South Africa, and also the creative genius behind I AM WOK. Well, I don’t know if he’s actually a genius, but he is one funny bru! A word of warning to the easily offended amongst you, Warwick loves to poke fun at people, and can be a bit sexist at times, too. If you can put aside your political correctness for a minute, or an hour or two, go take a gander at the wonderful world of Wok. It’ll make you laugh! If it doesn’t, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
The French Connection is the video travel (b)log of three of France’s best surfers not currently competing on the ASP World Championship Tour. Yes, they do throw on the occasional contest jersey, but life isn’t just about competition… Remember what I said earlier about the importance of having fun? Well, Joan Duru, Marc Lacomare and Charly Martin have learned that lesson well! Too well maybe… Vive le surf! Vive la fête! Vive la French Connection!
Fish Tales is where you’ll find Paul Fisher, another former pro surfer, getting up to no good in the real world and posting all his shenanigans in the virtual one for those of us who enjoy living vicariously through other people’s ill deeds! Paul and his Mad Hui’s posse are all about surfing and sex, and he and his best mate Leigh Sedley are also into mixing music. So, if you hear that ‘Cut Snake’ (formerly known as ‘Bareback DJ’s) is in town for a gig, follow the advice of their fellow countrymen from AC/DC, lock up your daughter and lock up your wife! Try to find the video of Paul getting a full body wax in a beauty salon. Priceless!
If you don’t already know the answer to the question, “Who is J.O.B.?”, there are a few ways to find out. Each one will undoubtedly give you a different answer, but that is part of the mystery of the man himself. Is Jamie O’Brien a rebel, or is it all just an act? I’m incapable of giving you a suitable response. Have fun making up your mind for yourself. He’s got a website, he’s on twitter, and thanks to Red Bull there is a whole documentary series of videos about his life. One thing I can tell you, he’s one of the best surfers in the world, and for that reason alone, he’s worth checking out!
So far, this post has been all about websites created by or featuring current or former pro surfers. Pete Bowes is definitely a surfer, and his website definitely adresses the sport of surfing, but not in the mould of those presented above. If you believe his Facebook profile, he’s a very old surfer, born on June 13th, 1910. He is also an accomplished writer. Obviously one of his favourite topics is the sport of kings, but you can, and hopefully will spend hours reading his other musings on pretty much anything that has caught his fancy over the course of his life. The list is long. I find Pete intriguing, because if he really is 102 years old, he has an intellect that is still as sharp as a tack and a sense of humour and joie de vivre to go along with it. I’m sure he’s enjoyed a few TGIFriday parties over the years! To your health, Mr. Bowes!
