The very ambitious and entrepreneurial Richard Branson is launching Virgin Galactic this year. The experience is due to start this December and so far 500 people have booked on and paid the mere £200,000 for the privilege. Branson believes this is just the start and speculates that one day we my even have hotels in Outer Space.
Virgin Atlantic will launch commercial services on SpaceShipTwo, a six passenger, two pilot spacecraft taking customers 63 miles into Outer Space.
As of February, Spaceshiptwo, the first vehicle in the companies proposed five-fleet, had completed 31 atmospheric test flights in all, 15 attached to its carrier aircraft White Knight II and 16 glide tests.
It’s unclear what the sub orbital space market is worth but rumored to have a potential value of $3billion in the next few years. Virgin do have competition with several other start up companies wanting to dominate the space tourism market. Branson welcomes the challenge and recently said at the Grammy awards – “You’ve got to have a ‘yes’ mentality and be willing to take risks and allow people to fall flat on their face. Don’t criticize them when they do otherwise they wont take risks in the future”.
“Screw it, just do it – get on and try things”
I wonder if he has any plans to meet up with Felix Baumgartner for a quick gin and tonic and a chat before his jump!
