The press is getting excited about Felix Baumgartner and his potential 4 world records if everything goes to plan.
The jump is due this summer between July and the start of of October. Other than his suit leaking, one of the biggest worries of the mission seems to be if Felix goes into a flat spin after he has jumped. I have heard stories of this happening with wingsuit flying to the extent that the blood vessels in the retina actually burst! In this case Felix has an emergency pilot shoot that can be released if necessary. I must say I doubt how effective this would be in the upper reaches of the jump due to the low density of particles in the atmosphere. (If a BASE jumper throws a pilot shoot at exactly the same time that they jump, it takes a couple of seconds to get enough speed and consequently enough resistance to open the container with the parachute in). One of the things that Kittinger spoke about when he set the record in 1960 was the strange feeling he experienced with no sound and no forces to push against, like sky diving in a vacuum.
When Felix leaves the capsule, the helium in the balloon will be released and with the help of a small parachute it will return back to Earth. It sounds like there is stiff competition for the data, for companies wishing to pursue Space Travel for tourists in the future.
