“In life it’s our choice whether we laugh or cry – and I chose to laugh.”
This week I had the opportunity to sit in the studio at EpicTV and share stories and conversations with two amazing women. I feel like I could probably say that every week after my interviews with inspiring female adventurers, but I think this week was particularly special.
Everything fell into place, timing was right, and both Géraldine Fasnacht and Karina Hollekim, two of the world’s top base jumpers, skiers, and snowboarders, were available to chat. Geraldine arrived at the studio with a radiant smile and passion for life that is infectious! We know each other through common friends but have never met before. The conversation flowed with ease, and her passion for life and adventure were instantly obvious. As a “new” webcast host, I’m still a little unsure on my feet. Each week I wonder how each conversation will go, especially with people I don’t know or have never met, and who have such impressive resume’s.
I met Karina a few years back when she graciously came to Chamonix to show her film 20 Seconds of Joy for a project I was working on at the time. Again, she was radiant, confident and full of life, easy to get along with, and easy to be inspired by.
I didn’t realize, until I saw the new film One Step Beyond by Sebastien Montaz-Rosset, that Karina and Geraldine share such an amazing partnership and history; two women, at the top of their sports, or should I say many sports, setting standards for both men and women alike, who have shared many trips and adventures together, as well as trying times.
I think when we see people like Karina and Geraldine, and we see the list of accomplishments – extreme skiing competition titles, first descents, pushing the limits of base jumping, expeditions – it looks like a life of bliss. And it is! But, there are two sides to every story. Each person has had a journey, that wasn’t always easy, that wasn’t always happy. And in those moments, we have a choice. Both women have an incredible story of journey and each of them has had a choice. Geraldine expresses it best when she says, “In life it’s our choice whether we laugh or cry – and I chose to laugh.” I would say Karina lives these words as well.
So…when you are inspired by these women, and all that they’ve accomplished, and all that they continue to accomplish, don’t forget to be inspired by their choice to laugh. And, take that and translate it into your life. Know that the suffering is worth the passion, the loss is worth the experience, to live and to feel alive, vibrant and full of energy, you have to take risk. It doesn’t matter what level, but challenge yourself, to live outside your comfort zone, even just a little bit, because you’ll be amazed to find what you’ll learn when you go there.
To learn more about these two amazing women, check out their films. One Step Beyond (which you can find on the EpicTV server) and 20 Seconds of Joy, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
